This diet was developed by Doctor Ornish, a doctor well known in the medical community because of his successes in the reversing of blockages to the heart, which was, until then, thought impossible without the usage of surgery or drugs.
Dr. Ornish’s advise is to consume high quantities of complex carbohydrates such us whole grain breads and cereals, fruit and vegetables instead of just sugar. This has the effect of making the diet high in volume as well as in fiber in spite of the fact that the kilo joule amount consumed is low.
This diet, therefore, induces weight loss since the person would have eaten a great amount of this kind of foods in order to exceed the calorie requirement. That is why gaining weight or even maintaining a high body weight is very difficult with this diet.
How the diet works
The high-fiber content helps to slow down the absorption of the food eaten into the digestive system, therefore the feeling of being full lasts longer. The complex carbohydrates do not cause blood sugar changes.
Ornish plan details
In this diet only small quantities of meat are recommended, also, not much dairy food and little fat. The doctor breaks it down into foods that should be eaten all the time, some of the time and none of the time.
These are the aliments to be eaten when the person is hungry until he is full:
- Beans and legumes
- Fruits
- Grains
- Vegetables
These are to be eaten in moderation:
